Bespoke Business At Its Best

Jonny and Lucy’s plans for their joinery business are anything but wooden.

The husband-and-wife duo are on the cusp of taking JC+Co to the next level. Their strong work ethic, firm values, and can-do attitude attract domestic and commercial customers with an eye for detail and a love of bespoke furniture.

When the Accelerator programme began, JC+Co had a string of regular clients, including a high-profile furniture shop based in London.But they faced a dilemma—they needed to scale but were running out of time in their business.

THE CHALLENGE

A constant race against the clock

Lucy says “business owners have to have a broad range of skills. From HR to marketing to business planning.” And to scale JC+Co, the team needed to improve on their knowledge and business practices to prepare them for that next growth stage.

When starting the programme, Jonny was working around the clock to meet customer demand. But with a young family at home, he knew something had to give and his ways of working needed to be more sustainable.

Jonny said, “it’s not that I wasn’t trying hard enough to find more time for everything; I was! I just didn’t know how to business plan and put in the systems we needed without losing the bespoke/handmade quality our clients expect.”

Working with the Accelerator mentors, Lucy and Jonny discovered two major business bottlenecks holding them back.

The Solution

Time in the bank

Jonny was spending a lot of time fitting the products JC+Co created. He realised that this wasn’t where his strengths were, and they’d be better off outsourcing the work.

They also realised that a lot of the drying time used within the furniture production was eating into their working day and slowing things down. They improved their spray (paint) booth, and collectively those two adjustments saved JC+Co a week per month. This is a considerable time saving that will have a massive impact on productivity levels.

Lucy and Jonny now have the confidence (and time) to chase certain orders and specific clients. The result of which could see them doubling their turnover soon.
